New Year's resolutions
So, the first decade of the 21st century has passed. What are your resolutions for the new year?
For me it's a number of things I want to (and probably will) finish this year:
Acquire my driver's license (probably gonna happen, since I'm already halfway or so)
Finish my book
Create a website
Earn my bachelor's degree in marine biology
Start training mixed martial arts
Lose about 20 pounds by the end of February
There's probably some more things I could put on there, but they've slipped my mind already

Re: New Year's resolutions
I'm not big on New Years Resolutions, but I do have a few reasonable goals I'd like to achieve this year:
- Also need to get my drivers license (which is also close)
- Move to Cape Town (99% chance of that happening, as got a great opportunity - just got to sort some things out first) - goes hand in hand with moving out and getting my own life away from my dad.
- Start Jiu Jitsu. Will continue in Muay Thai too (my first priority).
- Stop being responsible for certain people's lives, and let them start to take care of themselves. I'm going to focus on my needs too this year, and that means letting go of a lot of things and people.
- Do at least 3 of the things on my "List Of Things To Do Before I Die". Only did 1 last year.
- Get out more and do things that make me happy.
So yeah, this is basically my year to be a little bit selfish for a change. I'm sure that then I'll finally to able to find myself.
There are a few personal things too, so I'm leaving it at that.

Re: New Year's resolutions
"Sever all ties with parents"...that's kinda huge. Of course I know virtually nothing about you, but I can tell you that I didn't much like my parents until I moved out 2.5 years ago and they suddenly started treating me like a person (and an adult). Although I still have to help my dad sometimes, but that's ok. I guess what I'm saying is...be careful with this. It's much easier to sever ties than to reconnect them
In what field are you trying to receive your degree?
Update on my resolutions: Did not have any more driving lessons (ice and snow and everything), did a little bit of work on my book, did not start mma yet, don't have my degree yet (of course), did not start creating my website (still waiting on my credit card). However, I did already lose about 4.5-5 pounds this year. So losing a total of 20 by mid Feb should be very doable. I'm now like 189-190.... Yes, I know

Re: New Year's resolutions
Field? Degree in Art History.
As for the family thing, it's a looooooong story but they threw me out of the house xmas'08 for not dealing with accepting something about me...and haven't seen them till this xmas and it all just started up again. There is a personal underlying issue here which I don't think is appropriate for here lol, but it's a huge problem, I would do happily without them.

The only thing I can say is to never sever ties COMPLETELY with your parents, but rather just do what you're doing now, which is removing yourself from them. I'm with you on the "Find a committed relationship and not run away from it" bit - although I'm not ready to commit this year, so it will probably be my resolution in a few years time, lol.
First fight - I agree it would be awesome to win in a first fight, but even if you don't, just know that it will make you a better fighter. Most fighters lose in their first challenge.
Re: New Year's resolutions
Thanks hon for the advice to be honest winning the first fight would be the icing on the cake, if I lose it its no big deal. Its all about progression right?
As for the family thing I'm sure we'll come back full circle, but I wouldn't cry if I never had anything to do with them, and that is being honest, we'll see how it goes I guess.

Re: New Year's resolutions
Don't worry about your emotional baggage. For some reason people with baggage tend(ed) to be the ones I talked to the most. Or rather they talked to me and I listened...

Re: New Year's resolutions
I'm not even going to bother writing down what I've accomplished from my list yet. It's too early, lol.
Re: New Year's resolutions
Yeh, it should be. But since I have given myself about 6 weeks to accomplish one, an update after a week is justified. I'm going to do my 1.5 hour semi cross-country mountain bike ride and run in a couple hours. But today apparently, because of wind, it'll feel like it's -15C...with warnings about frozen faces. So we'll see how that goes
